Prodexpo is regularly held at a very high level, and the edition of 2024 was no exception. The show has become a key event for solving the issues of ensuring food security of this country and saturating the Russian market with new products of high quality.

“We are very pleased that our Russian manufacturers are very well represented at the exhibition. There are over 1,600 of them. And we are, of course, very grateful to our foreign colleagues. Of the 40 countries represented at the exhibition, a third of the exhibitors came from those states whose governments have imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation. Despite this, businessmen understand what the Russian food market is like in terms of its capacity and the dynamics of its development.”

At the end of the ceremony, its attendees took part in the opening of Iran's national pavilion and visited a group stand of the Vladimir oblast.

“This is probably the first time that the Vladimir oblast has taken part with such an extended programme. I am sure that this is a good continuation, if not a start, of our work with the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Here you can definitely see what the competitors are doing, find partners, both domestic and foreign, and present your products in a favourable way. There are also new exhibitors – companies that produce dry food and healthy snacks.”

The exhibition hosted a meeting of Maxim Fateev, Acting Director General at EXPOCENTRE AO, and Alireza Peyman Pak, Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The parties discussed the expansion of cooperation.

There were direct negotiations between food industry enterprises of the Moscow and Vologda oblasts. The meeting was organised by EXPOCENTRE AO, the Vologda Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Moscow Region. On behalf of EXPOCENTRE, the participants were welcomed by Sergey Selivanov, First Deputy Director General. He expressed confidence that the negotiations at the meeting would be as successful as Prodexpo 2024, which had once again broken records in terms of scale, number of exhibitors and visitors. The Government of the Vologda Oblast signed an Agreement on Cooperation with the Federal Centre for the Development of Exports of the Agroindustrial Complex of Russia.

Show highlights

Numerous stands presented food from all over the world from basic products and everyday drinks to gourmet delicacies, sports nutrition, food for healthy lifestyles, halal, kosher, and exotic products, protein-enriched products, sugar-free, gluten-free, probiotic products, as well as superfoods, biologically active supplements, microgreens grown on vertical farms, and plant-based alternative foods.

Participation in this large-scale event allowed companies from Russian regions to meet representatives of the largest retail chains in Russia, discuss the possibility of selling their products in other regions and countries, generate contacts with new suppliers, and establish new optimal supply chains.

The exhibitors of Prodexpo 2024 showcased a large number of new products such as new trademarks, brands, innovative products, as well as various exclusive delicacies of geographical regions.

The Meat and Meat Products. Cooked Meats. Poultry, Eggs sector welcomed more than 120 companies from Russia, Belarus, Brazil, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Lithuania. The exhibitors included both major holdings and small companies from Russian regions. They showed a wide range of products such as beef, including marbled beef, pork, lamb, venison and horse meat, as well as poultry, i.e., chicken, ducks, turkeys and quails.

The Dairy Products. Cheese sector offered abundance of dairy products with SKU (commodity item identifier). It brought together more than 170 companies from Russia, Belarus, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Serbia, which showcased a lot of new products.  

The Ice-Cream sector presented products of companies from Russia and Belarus. Along with a variety of classic ice-cream varieties, the show presented innovative developments, including lactose-free desserts, sugar-free functional ice-cream, and reduced fat and sugar ice-cream. 

One of the largest sectors – Confectionery. Bakery. Snacks. Nuts. Dried Fruit offered products of more than 460 companies from 19 countries.

The Groceries. Cereals. Pasta. Spices, Kitchen Herbs sector brought together more than 160 companies from 12 countries. They showed ethnic products (noodles, sauces, spices, seasonings) for both restaurants and retail. 

The Canned Food. Sauces. Ketchups sector welcomed 158 companies from 14 countries, including Russia, Belarus, China, Greece, Italy, Thailand and Turkiye. They offered meat, fish, vegetable and dairy products.

More than 70 companies from Russia, China, Chile and Turkiye demonstrated chilled, smoked, dried fish, snacks, caviar, crabs, mussels and other seafood at the Fish and Seafood sector. For the first time, Russian producer DALPROMRYBA, specialising in tuna supplies, took part in the show.

The sector of Frozern Foods. Semi-Prepared Foods. Ready-to-Eat Foods presented 55 companies from Russia, China, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia and Turkiye offering frozen fruits and vegetables, semi-prepared products, pelmeni and vereniki.

Fresh vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, berries and wild food were shown by the exhibitors from Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Georgia and Serbia.

The sector of Vegetable Fats showcased products of companies from Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Greece, Spain and Turkiye. These products included a wide range of sunflower, olive, rapeseed, soya, corn, tropical oils, as well as mixes that have become popular.

One of the top trending topics is products for a healthy lifestyle. Prodexpo 2024 offered a variety of products such as sports nutrition, functional nutrition, products for vegans, beverages, protein bars, dietary supplements, gluten-free products, plant milk, meat, and much more. The Healthy Nutrition sector brought together about 100 companies from Russia, Belarus and China.

The Juices, Mineral Water. Soft Drinks sector has grown. More than 200 companies from 10 countries offered mineral waters, juices, lemonades, fruit drinks, carbonated and functional drinks, and energy drinks. For the first time companies from Turkmenistan (Yupekchi E.S., AK YOL Miwe Içgileri Economic Society) and a beverage producer from Germany (Vitasky) participated in the show.

The Tea. Coffee sector presented over 120 companies from 12 countries and offer a variety of products: bound, pressed, gift, herbal, berry, fruit, loose tea, black, green, white, oolong, puerh, craft tea blends, the creation of which was inspired by trends in the industry of health and nutrition. Sri Lanka had a special showcase at the national level. Companies from Indonesia (Kapal Api and PT Sumber Kopi Prima), India (Perfect Brew), Sri Lanka (Royal Touch), Kazakhstan (Tea House and Tea Times), which are new to the Russian market, as well as new Russian brands SDC-Foods (Ahmad Tea TM), Aristocrat, Krasnodar Chai Manual Picking and Iranian (Farzin Tea) participated for the first time. New products in the coffee sector, both for restaurants and catering chains, as well as for retail and wholesale, included coffee for cezve, coffee machines, extra-fine grinds, French press and moka pots, coffee with different degrees of roasting, and ground coffee. Chicory, coffee drinks and cocoa were also presented. 

Prodexpo Organic brought together companies from Russia, Iran, Thailand, Turkiye and Vietnam and offered new products of all sectors: meat, dairy, cheese, groceries, confectionery, snacks, fruit and vegetables, nuts, beverages, including alcoholic beverages, seasonings, spices, superfoods and exotic products such as young jackfruit in brine, chia seeds, quinoa, sesame, amaranth, banana and almond flour, and Himalayan pink salt. There were new exhibitors. A company from Vietnam (Rita Food and Drink Company Limited) offered its soft drinks for the first time in Russia, and a producer from Iran (Zubin Organic Agro Industry) offered tea. 

Prodexpo 2024 offered Russia's largest showcase of alcoholic beverages and wines – Prodexpo Wine. This year, its best part were a corner with a series of masterclasses, the Russian Wine Project – the Centre of Wine Culture, and a the Craft Beer Corner, which brought together the best representatives of small beer brewing and mead brewing, as well as traditional cider making, which is now a relevant and notable trend in the alcohol industry. 

A variety of ideas and technologies, including those for retail, equipment, packaging solutions and ready-made packaging for every taste and occasion, including festive and New Year packaging, were presented at Prodexpo Pack & Technology.

The state of the labour market in 2024 was demonstrated by vacancies and CVs posted by the Employment Centre. Eighty companies participating in Prodexpo 2024 posted their vacancies and 25 candidates offered their CVs. There were more than 100 consultations on personnel issues. Vacancies for production line operators, loaders and packers ranked first in terms of employers' requests. Technologists were second, and sales managers were third. Staff shortage remains a fundamental business issue in 2024.

Conference programme

The conference programme of Prodexpo 2024 opened with the Panel Discussion on Strategy 2030: Development, Promotion and Support of Organic Production.

The discussion participants included Alexander Borisov, Chair at the Council for Consumer Market Development of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sergey Mitin, First Deputy Chair at the Russian Federation Council Committee on the Agrarian and Food Policy and Nature Management, Vyacheslav Fedyunin, Director of the Organic Fund, Denis Konstantinov, Deputy Chair at the Management Board of Rosselkhozbank, and other association heads and company CEOs. 

The key issues were the popularisation of organic products, the necessary support for organic producers, the financial state of the industry, the expansion of the production base together with the segment of consumers of organic products.

Deputy Governor of the Khanty-Mansi – Ugra Autonomous Okrug Sergey Chernyaev and Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Rostov Oblast Elena Tolmosova gave specific examples of promoting and supporting organic producers in their regions. 

According to the speakers, Russia has great growth opportunities in the field of organics and natural production, but at the same time it is necessary to increase turnover to unlock the existing potential and to create a culture of consumption of organic products.

On the first day of Prodexpo 2024, an important plenary session on New Sales Realities. Growth Points of Export Opportunities was held by the Russian Quality System (Roskachestvo) and EXPOCENTRE AO.

The session began with an award ceremony for manufacturers of products awarded the Russian Quality Mark, which is given to the best Russian-made products based on the results of fan surveys by Roskachestvo. The ceremony was conducted by Viktor Evtukhov, State Secretary – Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Russia, and Maxim Protasov, Head of Roskachestvo.

Viktor Evtukhov, Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade: 

“About 250 Russian companies have already received the Quality Mark, and today 10 more have joined them. The presence of the Quality Mark on a product is an additional incentive for consumers to buy it, and for manufacturers it serves as an additional competitive advantage both in the Russian and foreign markets. The quality mark is widely known far beyond the borders of our country and exporting companies also actively use it.”  

Speakers at the plenary session included Dmitry Vostrikov, Executive Director at Rusprodsoyuz, and Yulia Mikhaleva, Deputy Head of Roskachestvo.

The plenary session was also attended by experts from the Federal Service for Accreditation (RusAccreditation), the Russian Export Centre, Agroexport and representatives of major exporting companies. They discussed the specifics of exports to specific countries and services to support exports. Special attention was paid to the growth points of export opportunities for producers from large to small and micro businesses.

EXPOCENTRE AO in partnership with the Food Ingredients Producers Union organised the Workshop on Food Ingredients: a New Paradigm of Requirements for Application Regulation, Conformity Assessment and Labelling. Review of Amendments No.2 to TRTS 029/2012 and Related Technical Regulations – 024/2011, 022/2011, 027/2012.

The workshop covered legislative changes and their specifics, new requirements for safety indicators, labelling and transport of products, and provided an overview of developments in a number of related technical areas.

The event was attended by Tatyana Savenkova, President at the Food Ingredients Producers Union, Oksana Kuznetsova, Director at the Gorbatov Centre for Food Systems Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chair at the Technical Committee for Standardisation TC/ICT 154 “Food Additives, Flavourings, Food Salt”, representatives of professional associations, relevant research institutes and different companies. 

The experts shared their experience in conformity confirmation, good practices in the circulation and use of food ingredients, fulfilment of mandatory requirements for food products, and provided an overview of changes in legislation.

The Russian Quality System (Roskachestvo) together with the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and EXPOCENTRE held the Thematic Session on the Halal Products Market: Effective Infrastructure and New Opportunities. The session was attended by representatives of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, the Federal Accreditation Service, representatives of the management of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Bashkortostan, as well as manufacturers of halal products.

The session participants discussed the latest trends and prospects for the development of the halal market in Russia and other countries, and received information on key aspects of creating and maintaining an effective infrastructure of halal product cycles, as well as new opportunities and challenges in this industry.

The Thematic Session on Tasteful Improvement of Efficiency was held by EXPOCENTRE AO and the Russian Quality System (Roskachestvo). Each of the expert participants shared their experience and best practices in achieving sustainable development goals and national priorities, and discussed the most effective tools and methods of maintaining sustainability and increasing the efficiency of enterprises in conditions of instability, as well as such a tool as the Russian Government's Quality Award model.

The invited experts included representatives of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, EASC – the Euro-Asian Council for Standardization, Metrology and Certification, the Food Ingredients Producers Union, the Union of Juice, Water and Beverage Producers, Maslozhirovoy Soyuz Rossii, the United Confectioners Holding, and the Pyaterochka retail chain. 

The panel on Intellectual Property for Food Products was held by the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Intellectual Property Council of Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and EXPOCENTRE AO for manufacturing importers, suppliers, marketplace sellers, and lawyers.

The panel participants shared their knowledge on IP protection for food products, experience in fighting counterfeiting, and building a strategy in the conditions of parallel imports.

The event was attended by Dmitry Fadeev, Chair at the Council on Intellectual Property of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Alexander Borisov, Chair at the Council on Development of Consumer Market of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ruslan Malkov, Deputy Chair at the Council on Intellectual Property of the Russian Chamber of Commrece and Industry, Head of the Working Group on Assistance to Business in the Development of Intellectual Property in Regions, Director General at Galifanov, Malkov & Partners, Alexander Shirkhanov, Head of the Department for Ensuring Control of Goods Containing IP Objects at the Department of Trade Restrictions, Currency and Export Control of the Federal Customs Service of Russia, etc.

The 14th Halal International Congress was held under the motto ‘Halal is the Path to Growth’. The event was organised by the International Centre for Standardisation and Certification “Halal” under the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation.

This year, the participants emphasised the entry of Russian halal products into the markets of African countries, the development of the tourism sector through certification to halal standards, and the pressing issue of developing and adopting national halal standards.

The congress consisted of four sessions: Halal Industry as a Driver of Export of Russian Agricultural Products, Development of Halal Industry: a Matter of State Importance, Science and Education as an Integral Part of Halal Industry and Practical Experience of Partners of the International Centre for Standardisation and Certification “Halal” under the Russia Muftis Council.

One of the major industry events of Prodexpo 2024 was the 19th Russian Conference on the Alcoholic Beverages Market – AlcoCongress 2024. Its head and moderator was Yuri Yudich.

At the first focus session of the congress, Analysis and Forecast, Nielsen marketing company analysed the state of the alcohol market. At the subsequent thematic sessions of the congress, experts spoke about state support for Russian winemaking, structural changes in the alcohol market, in particular, in wine sales, the balance of the assortment and the interaction of domestic producers of alcoholic beverages with retail chains, the strategy of competition with imports, and other important aspects of the market and its prospects.

At the end of AlcoCongress 2024, there was an award ceremony for the winners of the Prodexpo International Wine Competition & Guide.

Prodexpo 2024 hosted an award ceremony for the winners and laureates of the first stage of the Moscow Quality competition of goods and services produced in Russia.  

The competition was organised by the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the support of the Vechernyaya Moskva media holding and Technologiya Chistoty Group. 

The first stage of the competition was dedicated to products from the milk and dairy products category. Later, Muscovites and experts will vote for other categories of products, including bakery and meat.

The winners in 30 categories of milk and dairy products were awarded, including two special categories for small and medium-sized producers: participants in the Made in Moscow programme.  

Vladimir Platonov, President at the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Marina Petrova, Chair at the Expert Council, presented the companies with certificates for the right to use the Winner of the Moscow Quality 2024 brand.

A presentation of nuts from Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad Region took place on 6 February. Vladimir Padalko, Vice President at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, spoke at the presentation. He noted the special flavour of nuts from this region and expressed hope that products from Kyrgyzstan will be in demand in the Russian market and will be liked by consumers. 

The 22nd Russian Congress of Milk Producers and Processors the Annual General Meeting of the Russian Union of Dairy Enterprises were devoted to the key issues of the Russian dairy industry. The event was held by the Russian Union of Dairy Enterprises. The participants reviewed the results of the dairy industry in 2023 and discussed the current situation, the prospects for milk and dairy producers, and various issues related to export and import of dairy products.

The congress was attended by Vladimir Kashin, Chair at the State Duma Committee on Agrarian Issues of the Russian Federal Assembly, Sergey Mitin, First Deputy Chair at the Committee of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly on Agrarian and Food Policy and Nature Management, Sergey Dankvert, Head of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor), Sergey Lisovsky, Deputy Chair at the State Duma Committee on Competition Protection of the Russian Federal Assembly, and Ekaterina Priyezheva, Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade. 

Another event organised by the Russian Union of Dairy Enterprises was the Conference on the Relevant Issues of Organisation of Dairy Production and Ensuring Their Compliance with the Established Requirements

The main events of the Russian food market for food suppliers and retailers were the events organised jointly by EXPOCENTRE AO and KVK Imperia Forum.

The Russian Prodforum is a major annual event for the Russian food market. This year, its programme included six main conferences for food suppliers: Supplier to Retail Chains, Entering Retail Chains, Private Label 2024, Food Sales through Marketplaces, Food Brand Ecosystem and Marketing and Advertising.

The events were attended by buyers of federal and regional retail chains, manufacturers and suppliers of food products and packaging. The participants held business meetings and received answers to topical issues of production and trade development from leading experts.

The Russian Prodforum was complemented by the Centre of Retail Chains. It included a series of workshops for retail representatives. They were conducted by more than 20 practicing experts in the field of shop construction, development of retail formats and concepts, marketing and retail design.

The Centre of Retail Chains™ was traditionally in high demand at the exhibition.  3,102 direct negotiations were held between food and beverage suppliers and department heads and commercial directors of more than 100 federal, regional and local retail chains, including Auchan, Vkusvill, Magnit, Azbuka Vkusa, Perekrestok, Pyaterochka, and Verny. 2,638 contracts totalling RUB 29,178,000,000 were concluded.

The Russian Forum CATMAN at Prodexpo 2024 was devoted to up-to-date technologies, tools and practices of category management. Anna Tishchenko, a leading category management analyst, retail technology expert, practicing business coach and consultant, Ivan Fedyakov, founder and CEO at INFOLine, and Anastasia Sidorina, Director of Client Relations at Romir Research Holding, shared their knowledge.

For the first time at Prodexpo, Anna Tishchenko, a founder of Retail Practical Management for Business and creator of the Category Management community in Telegram and VKontakte, organised an offline meeting of the CATMANPRO Club and, together with partners, prepared an educational programme for the participants.

Nine experts spoke during the meeting. They revealed eight relevant topics for retail and category management professionals.

The topics were determined by open voting on the website during the registration of participants. The topics of innovations and key performance indicators in category management and the influence of consumer psychology on category management were the most intense in terms of questions and visitors' reactions. The management of this event received maximum points.  

Retail.ru together with Retail Practical Management for Business held the Special Session on Bringing Goods to the Shelf. How to Simplify the Way to Retail Outlets in 2024? The event participants talked about a relevant toolkit for TM (brands) and discussed topical issues of cooperation with retail chains.  

The results of 2023 and trends for 2024 in the wholesale meat market were discussed at a panel organised by the National Union of Meat Processors.

The prestigious professional competitions attracted a large number of participants. The best manufacturers of food products and packaging were honoured with awards.
